Jesus and Cross-Centered Worship Songs

Hi friends. If you’re a Christian and into music, like me, surely, you have had experiences like mine when you tend to categorise Christian songs. Not by genre but by message. There are songs that tell about your love for God, songs about the struggles you go through and many others.

Lately, in my journey of getting to know more about Jesus and understanding His grace and how His sacrifice on the Cross is FAR more than what the average Christian calls ‘basic’ teaching, I have come to dismiss some of the Christian songs that, ironically, don’t magnify Christ at all.

I have come to realise that some of these songs, instead of magnifying Jesus Christ, magnify people’s circumstances and tend to make us weep and become emotional (not that being emotional is a bad thing) about our struggles, rather than getting reminded that Jesus is far greater than everything we go through. I am convinced that worship isn’t just us coming to God’s presence with our offering (as if there is ever an offering greater than what Jesus did on the Cross for us). Worship is a response, the result of Jesus’ perfect love and acceptance of us. Someone who has a clear revelation of Jesus’ undying and unconditional love for him is a worshipper.

Needless to say, a worshipper’s response of worship through singing songs is a reflection of that revelation. Consequently, worship songs that we should be hearing today express Jesus’ love for us, individually or as a whole. At least, that’s what we’d think, right?

But, no. Christian music is flooded with not-so-Christian messages. They call it variety. I call it unbelief, to be honest. Song of wailing, that make us feel depressed rather than lift us up, are not songs of worship. Anyway, I don’t want to make this post sound any more negative than that.

Therefore, I have this list of songs that magnify Jesus and His finished work on the Cross that are sure to remind you of what Jesus has done and how much we can fathom about His love for us. In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son as a sacrifice to take away our sins (1 John 4:10).

You may be wondering why it has to be about His love for us. Sure, there are songs that remind us to persevere and walk in holiness and all that stuff. However, I am a firm believer that the fundamental answer to all problems is Jesus’ unconditional love for us. The solution to every trial and tribulation, the escape from every temptation and the freedom from all kinds of bondages and addiction, is knowing what we have, and who we are in Christ.

We are the beloved of Christ, fully righteous in Him by faith. We are greatly blessed, highly favoured and deeply loved in Christ. Believing this truth gives us peace and power to stay above our circumstances. For this reason, I appeal to you, brothers and sisters, to start listening to Jesus-centered music. The more we seek Him, the more light shines in our lives and the better we’re off.

And, so, without further ado, here are some of the Jesus and Cross-centered songs that I know will bless you (with lyric videos). It is my YouTube playlist and I will be adding more whenever I can.
